Your Social Life In The Spring

Spring in the air, and recession-proof art events are being held all over LA. It has opened last month already, but tomorrow (7 to PM) is the discussion/roundtable/publication launch of the Sarah Cain & Rebecca Morris exhibition curated by the lovely Nancy Meyer (Hi Nancy!) at the Fellows of Contemporary Art, 970 N. Broadway, Suite 208. The show is up until April 26.
It conflicts with tomorrow's Franz West lecture at USC which follows the show he's having at LACMA where, incidentally, the "Art of Two Germanies" exhibition is very, very good.
There are some shows opening on Saturday, like Rebecca Bird at Paul Kopeikin and if you are in Eagle Rock you should absolutely go to High Strangeness, 12 artists with works about "the paranormal and the unexplained". Jeffrey Vallance (currently also on view at the Hammer), Doris Cypit and Dana Duff are among the artists. The night before, same place, sound event with Charlemagne Palestine!
Have fun everybody, and don't forget to answer the poll at the bottom of the page: FBC! needs to make some dough to keep on providing content to my avid readers!

A New FBC! Stupid Poll, Hooray!

To celebrate FBC!'s first anniversary, I've decided to put up not one, but two new polls! That's right, two for the price of one, it means one's free! Aren't we fighting the recession here at FBC!
I was thinking, what if the Presidential Candidates decided to spend our taxes, on ahem, not the budget deficit (does anybody really believes none of them candidates will raise taxes? you naive right-wingers, go back to economics school, okay?) but on the Arts? I know I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one, imagine all the peo-ple (all together!) living life in pea-ce oh ooooh oh oh.
Oh, er, Sorry, I thought I as all alone for one moment.
Anyway, have fun and chose for the best art VP ever!

And while am at it, tomorrow or Friday I'll post artist Vince Johnson's essay about his Air Force days in a Soviet-designed geodesic dome during the Cold War. Stay tuned!

The Horror! The End Of Civilization As We Know It

Since being elected, President Sese Seko Mobutu Idi Amin Bokassa Sarkozy has ridiculed his functions by becoming a tabloid attraction, despite being one of the ugliest males on the planet. We're happy for Cecilia she divorced him, frankly, and feel Carla Bruni has probably lost her mind in her bid to attract fame after the disastrous flop of her last record. We also feel she should get a better plastic surgeon for her next face lift, and maybe some type of dignified occupation besides screwing powerful midgets. Look what happened to Katie Holmes. You don't want to follow that path.
Well, at least the TomKat baby is cute, but we fear for the upcoming fruit of the sinful idyll between Carla and Sarko. No way in hell this kid will ever look cute. We hope for a miscarriage, frankly, or some divine intervention to redeem what seems un-redeemable on this earthly planet. OK, so far this is allegedly a rumor, and let's hope it will remain just that. Poor kid.

Anyway, to cheer up my Frenchy friends, I thought it would be a good opportunity for our idiotic and erratically irregular poll. Let's name the Sarkozy-Bruni offspring (I cannot, I cannot think about it without needing to barf, arrrrgggh). Napoleon is already taken, Adolf a bit too connoted. I'm taking suggestions, meanwhile, you can vote at the bottom of the page.

Latest Poll Results

So, our latest poll was about deciding how to name the new genre of trashy novel/chick lit for guys. Boy, was it animated! 7 of you, meaning what probably constitutes my entire readership voted, but there was no clear winner, between "Lad-Lit" (my own personal favorite, I think it sounds vaguely like some new porn lingo), "Boy-Boy 'Ture" (fun, though it sounds vaguely gay and we do not want to exclude the few stray heteros wandering on this blog) and "real men don't eat at the Ivy" which is very long, and in fact I was thinking about the London Ivy, though the BH outpost would qualify too.

Anyway, if you have some new suggestion send them here at FBC! In the meantime I'm going to scratch my head about the next poll. Since it seems our writers-in-arms cousins are going to be on strike soon (Hi Annie, Jonathan and Mike! Let me know if you need cheap soup recipes!) maybe they can help me out with a new poll idea, with all the free time they will have when not picketing the networks/studios.

The picture above is by Florence Trocmé , found on her blog.

Upcoming Poll

So it seems you guys haven't been very enthusiastic about saving Belgium. It's really sad. In passing, I'm going to post an entry about Jose Tixeira's show in Brussels in the next couple of days.
Anyway, I've been puzzled to see that only 2 people responded to the poll, but for some reason 3 answers are listed, each accounting for 50% of the polled readers, which is mathematically impossible. Curiously no one wanted to save Belgian beer.

Anyway, I think the next poll will be about the equivalent of chick-lit for males. Stay tuned!
